Recertification
Candidates who pass the Certification Examination for Nurse Life Care Planners are eligible to use the registered designation CNLCP after their names and will receive certificates from the CNLCP® Certification Board.
Certification for Nurse Life Care Planners CNLCPs is recognized for 5 years at which time the candidate must retake and pass the current certification examination for nurse life cate planners or meet such alternative requirements in effect at that time in order to retain certification.
A registry of Certified Nurse Life Care Planners will be maintained by the Certified Nurse Life Care Planner (CNLCP®) Certification Board and may be reported in its publications.

Recertification By Continuing Education Guidelines
CNLCP Recertification Criteria
Certification for Nurse Life Care Planners is recognized for a period of five (5) years at which time the candidate must retake and pass the current Certification Examination for Nurse Life Care Planners or meet such alternative requirements in effect at that time in order to retain certification.
Effective June 1, 2011, the CNLCP recertification criteria includes verification of sixty (60) continuing education units (i.e., CEU’s or credit hours) in nurse life care planning, or completion of a Board-approved nurse life care planner core curriculum, or completion of at least twelve (12) academic semester credits of nursing coursework related to nurse life care planning at the licensee's current level of licensure or higher.
Applications for Recertification along with proof of 60 continuing education units that comply with CNLCP® Certification Board recertification criteria is to be submitted as follows:
- Completed application and fees must be received by December 1 (if renewal is January), March 1 (if renewal is April), June 1 (if renewal is July) or September 1 (if renewal is October) for the year of renewal.
- Verified with a Provider Certificate Of Course Completion that includes verification of the course hours. The Certificate Of Course Completion should also include the name of the Course Provider, Course Title, Provider Number, Date, and Location of Course.
- If recertification application is delinquent within 30 days of its expiration there is a late fee of $200.00 for AANLCPSM members/$350.00 non-members. The late fee is added to the recertification fee of $375.00 AANLCPSM members/$575.00 non-members.
- If recertification application is over 60 days of expiration, the candidate is no longer able to use the designation of CNLCP and must submit to retesting at the full testing fee of $425.00 members/$625.00 non-AANLCPSM members. To become a member, go to www.aanlcp.org.
- Candidate is responsible for maintaining a file of Certificates of Attendance/Course Completion and all continuing education units for five (5) years from date of their certification.
CNLCP Credit/Continuing Education Requirements
The CNLCP® Certification Board points of credit renewal system is designed to encourage professional development. It allows the CNLCP to select from a variety of educational activities that meet professional and personal needs and to renew the CNLCP credential a total of 60 points of credit are needed every 5 years for renewal. Candidates maintain their actual documentation of CEUs, however, they MUST, fill out the forms completely with all the information requested. If there are questions regarding the courses taken, the Certification Board may ask for a copy of the Certificate of Completion.
CNLCP Credit/Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing Education (CE) Credit Hours for Recertification can be earned through:
- Nursing continuing education: One hour (60 minutes) of approved nursing continuing education pertaining to life care planning =1 contact hour.
- Presentations: 1 contact hour for one hour (60 minutes) each of presentation for which national or state approved continuing education has been granted to participants to a maximum of 10 per 5 year renewal period.
- Item Writing / Test Questions: 1 contact hour for every 5 questions submitted that are supported by evidence based nursing/medical references for a maximum of 10 contact hours per 5 year renewal period. Questions with reference supported answers should be submitted directly to the CNLCP® Certification Board through website or email.
- Formal Nursing Courses: Course outlines should be submitted to CNLCP® Certification Board in advance of the application for renewal for review and approval of contact hours.
- Academic Nursing Courses: Verification of the twelve (12) academic semester credits of nursing coursework related to nurse life care planning. Course semester outlines should be submitted to CNLCP® Certification Board in advance of the application for renewal for review and approval of contact hours.
- AANLCPSM Executive Board or CNLCP® Certification Board or association committee participation: 10 contact hours per year with documented or verified annual participation will be awarded. Participation is defined as 85% participation on the committee. The maximum points of credit that can be earned are 20 points in a 5 year period.
- Professional Journal Publication: Publications related to a nurse life care planning, article should be submitted to CNLCP® CB in advance of the application for review and approval of contact hours.
Note: Any program or credits that are in question should be submitted to the Certification Board 90 days in advance of any recertification date so that the above criteria can be verified.
Change of Address
It is the certificant’s responsibility to notify Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) about any change in address and contact information from time of initial application. Renewal notification reminders will be sent to the candidate at the address of record filed with the testing corporation. Please note that notification to the AANLCPSM) or CNLCP® CB does not comprise notification to the testing corporation.
